Cairo, 2011–2012. A historic period. I’m in the midst of events, but I am deliberately pointing my camera to the ground. In addition to recording the sound of the metropolis with all its facets, I film the ground and whatever happens to get in front of the lens. From this perspective rubbish, feet, shoes and the ground itself become signs for the viewer’s imagination. By pointing the camera to the ground I both quote and deconstruct visual habits, which are tied up with the bird’s eye view and the hegemony of the central perspective. From a purely media-aesthetic point of view, however, my main aim is to establish the aural as the real focus of attention. The sound is the only reference to the unseen.
